Biography
The Greek tenor Angelos Samartzis was born in Athens and brought up in Rhodes. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in opera singing from the University of Music Karlsruhe and his master’s from the University of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin. Among his mentors are Franco Farina, Julia Varady and Raina Kabaivanska.
He has sung many of the major roles of the tenor repertoire, including Verdi’s Don Alvaro La Forza del Destino, Manrico Il Trovatore, Gustavo Un ballo in Maschera, Alfredo La Traviata, Ismaele Nabucco and the title role of Don Carlo and Puccini’s Luigi Il Tabarro, Rinuccio Gianni Schicchi, Mario Cavaradossi Tosca, Dick Johnson La Fanciulla del West, Calaf Turandot, Pinkerton Madama Butterfly and Rodolfo La Bohème. Among his French roles are Don José Carmen, the title role of Faust, Hoffmann Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Jason Médée and among his German roles are Bacchus Ariadne auf Naxos, Narraboth Salome and Froh Das Rheingold. In comic Opera he has appeared as Marquis de Chateauneuf Zar und Zimmermann, in operetta as Camille de Rossillon Die lustige Witwe, in zarzuela Javier Moreno Luisa Fernanda and in music theatre Tony West Side Story. Concerts include tenor solo in the Beethoven Symphony No. 9 and in the Bruckner Te deum.
Among theatres in which he has appeared are the Greek National Opera, Royal Opera of Versailles, Estonian National Opera, Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus Minsk, Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre, Wroclaw Opera. German theatres include Opernhaus Nürnberg, Saarländisches Staatstheater, Staatstheater Braunschweig, Oper Halle, Staatstheater Kassel, Theater Freiburg, Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, Theater Nordhausen and Eutiner Festspiele. He has also appeared in concert venues such as the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Philharmonie Luxembourg and the Casa da Musica in Porto.
