Biography
Contralto Martina Mikelic was born in Split, Croatia and studied singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Admired for her intensive stage presence and extraordinary alto voice, she was selected as one of the best 10 talents from all the Austrian Art Universities and nominated twice for the Austrian Music Theater Award. At the age of 23, Martina Mikelic became an ensemble member of the Volksoper Wien where she has appeared in many major projects, including the title role of Carmen, Hippolyta A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Orlofsky Die Fledermaus, Magdalena Der Evangelimann, Ježibaba Rusalka, Zita Gianni Schicchi, Maddalena Rigoletto, Florence Pike Albert Herring, Kontschakovna Prince Igor, the Messenger Das Wunder der Heliane and Mary Der fliegende Holländer. She has also participated in numerous important festivals and productions around the world. These include Elektra at the Salzburger Festspiele, conducted by Daniele Gatti and Die Frau ohne Schatten conducted by Christian Thielemann. She also appeared at the Wiener Staatsoper in Elektra and sang alto solo in Beethoven Symphony No. 9 conducted by Christian Thielemann. She made her debut at the Komische Oper Berlin as Carmen and appeared at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan as Prince Orlofsky Die Fledermaus. At the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia Roma she took part in the Oratorio Das Paradies und die Peri conducted by Daniele Gatti. Among other famous venues, she has also appeared at the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory Moscow, at the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Wiener Musikverein and the Koninklijk Theater Carré Amsterdam.
